We built this display of fiery destruction for the 2006 Burning Man Art Festival in Black Rock City, Nevada. This breed is know as a mutant vehicle or more commonly called an "art car" Hundreds of these vehicles arrive each year purely because they can.

At over 8 ft wide, riding on steel wheels this monster has little trouble finding its home on the open Playa.
Here is the last time it was seen clean before diving into the desert dirt. It can be seen nicely loaded up for its 18 hour trip from Los Angeles to Black Rock City, Nevada.

It all started with this 1983 Chevy 1 Ton pickup. We knew there was a better use for it.
Hack and slash, everything was cut down to the frame, leaving nothing but part of the floor and fire wall. The leaf springs were removed and replaced with some more dramatic coils and a massive shock tower was made to match. The exhaust stacks were eventually cut down to 11 ft off the ground, but this picture shows the original 13 ft height. The steering, throttle and brakes were relocated to accommodate the raised seat. The drive shaft was shortened 11" and the rear end was moved forward to give it a shorter stance. The headers were redesigned to exhaust upward and add extra power to the propane jets in the top of the stacks.

Here we are building the steel wheels for the front of the vehicle. We used a stock rim for the base of the inner part of the wheel. The third photo shows the outer part of the wheel finished. |
